Coastal Skipper - Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Theory Sailing Course in Sussex

RYA Coastal Skipper - Yachtmaster Offshore Theory Course

  • Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory courses are held at Ringmer nr Lewes, in central Sussex.
  • Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Practical courses & Exam Prep are all held on the Solent.

Available Weekends and Weekdays - Advanced navigation theory for the serious skipper and aspiring professional.

With a maximum of six students to a course the instructor:student ratio is right, you have the benefit of the instructors near undivided attention.

The Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory syllabus makes considerable provision for the revision of subjects in the Day Skipper Course but those who have not acquired the knowledge set out in the Day Skipper Course are unlikely to assimilate all the subjects covered in this advanced course in the time available.

Building on the knowledge gained from Day Skipper theory the syllabus consists of: Position, The magnetic compass, Tides, Tidal Streams, Buoyage, Lights, Pilotage, GPS and chart plotters, Echo sounders, Logs, Deck log, Meteorology, Rule of the Road, Safety at Sea, Navigation in restricted visibility, Passage planning and Marine Environment.

Subjects such as lights, shapes and rule of the road can usefully be memorised pre-course, as can meteorology terms.

Three exam papers are taken. The IRPCS (rule of the road) paper has a pass mark of 80%. This paper is taken before the end of the course to allow time for a resit if required.

Chartwork and meteorology papers are taken on the last day. Unsuccessful candidates are invited to resit when they are ready, at no further cost.
