 Coastal Skipper Practical

 

  • RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper practical courses are held in the Solent.
  • Coastal Skipper theory is held at Ringmer, near Lewes in central Sussex.

 

Coastal Skipper theory runs the week before the practical, with VHF Radio and First Aid scheduled for the weekend before or in-between with Sea Survival and sometimes Offshore Safety around the same time. This is to make the best use of your time and holiday entitlement.

 

Naturally you need take only the courses you require, see the: Package deals and discounts section for some cracking deals if you are booking more than one course, or more than one person. 

 

Coastal skipper practical (and Yachtmaster prep) run from Sunday evening to the following Friday, succesful candidates are awarded an RYA course completion certificate.

 

Those candidates seeking an MCA certificate of competence for commercial work will need to take the practical exam on the Saturday/Sunday.

 

 

The entry requirements vary between the two different Coastal Skipper certificates: 

 

RYA Course Completion Certificate - the 5 day course:

Minimum pre-course experience:

15 Days sea time, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours. 

 

Assumed Knowledge:

Navigation to Coastal Skipper Shorebased standerd.

Sailing to Day Skipper Practical standard.

 

Course content:

Skippering techniques for coastal and offshore passages

 

Ability after course:

Skipper a ycht on coastal passages by day and night.

 

Minimum course duration:

5 Days

 

 

 

RYA/MCA Certificate of Competence, the 7 day course with a practical exam:

 

Previous experience and minimum sea time:

30 days sea time, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours.

 

Form of examination:

Practical

 

Certification required before examination:

VHF licence

First Aid certificate

 

Minimum exam duration:

6 to 10 hours for one candidate, 8 to 14 for two candidates.

 

Note:

If you have a Coastal Skipper practical course completion certificte the seatime requirement is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles and 12 night hours.

 

RYA Coastal Skipper

Dates for Coastal Skipper Practical:

October 12 - 17, exam 18/19

December 7 - 12, exam 13/14

 

The first day is a Sunday, we join the boat in the evening, settle in and get going the next morning.  

 

Coastal Skipper course fee:

5 Day course, £395 low season

7 Day course,  £550 low season. Exam fee extra, payable to RYA.
