RYA Coastal Skipper

RYA Coastal Skipper Practical

There are two types of 'Coastal Skipper' qualification. The RYA course completion certificate and the examined RYA/MCA Certificate of competence now known as RYA Yachtmaster Coastal.

Both certificates are supported by the same theory course - RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased. Completion of the theory course is not a pre-course requirement but you will need the level of knowledge imparted by following such a course, irrespective of how you gain that knowledge.

The RYA Coastal Skipper Course completion certificate is gained by completing the practical course syllabus over five days on a yacht. At the end of the course if all the boxes are ticked you will be awarded the certificate. This is the same format as an RYA Day Skipper Practical course and can be viewed as a step on from Day Skipper.

The RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence is somewhat more rigorous. You will be examined by an independent examiner in the same way as a Yachtmaster Offshore candidate is. While there is no official requirement to take any pre-exam training most candidates do in fact join a school boat for a week of intensive pre-exam preparation.

Associated courses

Coastal Skipper students may like to consider the following one day RYA courses.
Bear in mind that each of our practical courses entitles the student to a one day course free of charge - you may not have to pay for some of the following when studying with Mustang.
The VHF Radio licence is an essential qualification and a legal requirement wherever you sail.
Yachtmaster exam candidates are required to hold an RYA First Aid certificate in addition to the radio licence previously mentioned.
Qualified Yachtmasters who desire a comercial endorsement will also need to take the RYA Sea Survival course and an ML5 medical.
The RYA Diesel engine course is very useful if you are not a natural 'tinkerer' with things mechanical and the RYA Radar course is ever more popular with radar becoming more affordable. Radar tends to be viewed as a collision avoidance tool but actually has a much wider remit as a powerful pilotage tool.
