Taking an RYA Competent Crew Course. Enjoying the Solent...and beyond

RYA Competent Crew

RYA Competent Crew Course - on the Solent

The RYA Competent Crew course is a great way to learn how to sail without the pressures of taking responsibility for the skippering of the vessel. A nice time spent soaking up the day-to-day routines of a sailing yacht while cruising under sail and developing the hands on skills necessary to participate fully as crew.

The Competent Crew course introduces the complete beginner to cruising under sail and teaches personal safety, seamanship and helmsmanship to the level required to be a useful member of the crew of a cruising yacht.
By the end of the course you should be comfortable and proficient around a Sailing Yacht and ready to move on to RYA Day Skipper theory and RYA Day Skipper practical courses or perhaps our Fast Track Day Skipper course which has become so popular.

Associated courses
Competent Crew students may like to consider the following one day RYA courses. Bear in mind that each of our practical courses entitles the student to a one day course free of charge - you may not have to pay for some of the following when studying with Mustang.
The VHF Radio licence is an essential qualification and a legal requirement wherever you sail. Yachtmaster exam candidates are required to hold an RYA First Aid certificate in addition to the radio licence previously mentioned.
Qualified Yachtmasters who desire a comercial endorsement will also need to take the RYA Sea Survival course and an ML5 medical. The RYA Diesel engine course is very useful if you are not a natural 'tinkerer' with things mechanical and the RYA Radar course is ever more popular with radar becoming more affordable. Radar tends to be viewed as a collision avoidance tool but actually has a wider remit as a powerful pilotage tool.

Our yachts sail from Universal Marina on the Hamble. Easily the nicest marina on the Solent and perfectly positioned to access the central Solent. The Solent really is a yachtsmans playground, the perfect place to learn to sail, it's relatively calm waters can simultaneously challenge the most experienced racing yachtsman and make sail training such a joy for the uninitiated.

Testimonials

John was a fantastic instructor to have. This was my first time sailing and I felt very comfortable to ask questions or ask for help. He was also very happy to repeat theory if any of the students (including myself!) didn't understand the first time. The food was lovely, and when we ate off the boat, the pubs that John took us to were great, nice food and nice beer!.

Hania, Aug 2010
The boat was both clean and tidy, everything worked and it was obvious she has been looked after very well.- The course was everything it should be, fun, easy learning and informative. John really made things easy for all of us. His teaching style suited me perfectly and his knowledge is second to none.

Excellent instructor. He was admirably patient and encouraging with our mixed-ability group, very good company and clearly extremely experienced. We felt privileged to spend the week with Trevor.

John was great. He has so much experience and advice/instruction/knowledge to offer that I hope when I take my Day Skipper course he will be there to teach me again. It was a great introduction into sailing and I'm looking forward to taking this further!
